When one looks at Kenneth Zachariah Osborne, they’d probably say the see a quiet boy with a good head on his shoulders. That’s all true, though some people frown upon his tattoos and piercings. Behind every exterior there’s something deeper, and behind Kene’s there is a story.
On April 19, 1991 Susan Osborne called Brent in a panic. “Baby, I think they're coming!” She didn’t sound scared, but more excited than anyone in labor. Within minutes, Brent left his job at the construction site and pulled up in front of their small two bedroom house. Susan who was in no rush, told her husband to slow down, but before she knew it, she was having her baby in the small rusted ’87 Ford pickup, just five minutes shy of making it to the hospital, the Osborne’s were now a family of four.
Things were perfect in the house hold. Susan balanced her sleeping schedule with Kene and Zephan's while Brent did his fair share of diaper duty. As the babies grew, everything was a learning experience. First there was teething, then potty training of course, all the way to kindergarten and everything that comes in between. Nothing was easy with two mischevious twin boys running around, and both had a schedule of their own. Extremely close growing up, Susan would dress them in matching outfits until they were five and threw tantrums wanting to pick out their own outfits for the day. Kene was always fond of his father, admiring him when he came home from work with his construction clothes on, full attire complete with the hard hat. Kene would walk around with that thing on 24/7 if it wasn’t for his dad going to work. And as much as Kene admired his father, he was very much a Mama’s boy. Susan was a stay at home mother, her time spent teaching her sons how to read by the time they were four, Kene loved ever second he had with her. To Susan, he was a little person that she could tell everything to. Growing up, Kene and Zephan weren't like most of the other kids their age. They were taught that Santa Claus wasn’t a real person and the Easter bunny didn’t exist. Yes, they got Christmas presents, but none were from the portly man dressed in red and white who resided in the north pole. Never seeing the fun in finding colored eggs, Kene skipped out on the whole Easter experience all together. The boys never got money under their pillows when they lost a tooth, instead their mother told them that if one tooth could bring money, maybe they should bury their teeth to see if a money tree would grow. Every time Kene lost a tooth, that’s exactly what he did. After a few days, he’d get bored with watering the dirt where his tooth had been and go about his business until another tooth was loose.
Susan told the young boys wild stories, but behind her stories, there were fragments of the truth and only later would Kene find that out. She told them a story every night, one about a woman who wanted to be a singer. Every night the story changed and progressed. It was the Adventures of Suzie. That’s what she called it. When he and his brother were six, their father got into a horrible accident at work. The accident left him on disability and a year later, Brent and Kene woke to a house without Susan and Zephan. All that she left behind was a note on the refrigerator door that read: Kenneth, I went off to be a big star. I know you’ll understand. Take care of your Daddy for me. There was no mention of his brother, or why she took him at all. Brent fell apart. Without a job and a wife that just up and left him with their son, he became a heavy alcoholic. This lead to Kene learning how to fend for himself. He kept the house clean and did his very best as he watched his father slowly unravel. By the time Kene was thirteen, he didn’t give a fuck anymore. He was tired of playing into the role reversal and began to rebel by sneaking out of the house (which never was hard to do, but it was the thought of it all).
